The Residents "Santa Dog" 2 X 7" *** RESERVE FOR THIS IS $1,500 *** This is a copy of the very first release from The Residents! Issued in 1972, it is has two 7" records in a silk-screened sleeve. This is extremely rare! According to the PopSike web-site, this has sold at eBay auction sold for $3,096 on 3/26/07; for $3,051 on 3/11/07; for $2,718 on 5/27/07; and $1,800 on 9/15/08. Here's some more info: The package was the founding release from Ralph Records and consisted of two 45s in a hand silk-screened gatefold sleeve which was printed to look like a Christmas card from an insurance company. This sleeve included '50s-ish drawings illustrating each song surrounded by text saying "Season's Greetings from Residents Uninc." and announcing the upcoming Vileness Fats project. 500 copies were pressed but only 400 were usable because of various problems. Some of the sets were shrink-wrapped before the varnish on the silk-screening was dry and the packages had to be torn apart to be opened. Of the 400 usable copies, 300 were sent out to friends, record companies, and anyone else who came to mind. Richard Nixon was sent a copy, as was Frank Zappa, whose copy was returned "No Longer At Address" and was later given away in a contest. As mentioned above, the varnish finish on these has a tendency to be a little sticky and consequently this does have a little bit of damage on the inside of the gatefold where these is a small amount of tear-off between the surface where the varnish stuck.
